When we first launched the Oliver + S Hide-and-Seek Dress last season, we received numerous requests from many of you wanting to sew your own versions. It was fantastic feedback, and honestly, I had been itching to create an adult-sized version of that pattern myself! So here we are: introducing the Liesl + Co. Cinema Dress, now available in women’s sizes 0-20.
I absolutely adore everything about this dress design. It strikes the perfect balance between being relaxed and comfortable while still feeling feminine and flattering. Just like the Hide-and-Seek Dress, it features front pockets with those adorable welt details, princess seams, and a yoke that can be crafted from a contrasting fabric if desired. The sleeves are three-quarter length with cuffs, giving it that effortlessly chic vibe.
The Cinema Dress comes in two lengths: View A falls just below the knee, and View B is a longer, mid-calf length that’s incredibly trendy right now. Depending on your preference, you can easily adjust the length—whether it’s adding a couple of inches to View B or shortening View A for a mini-dress or tunic look.
I’ve been experimenting with different fabrics to achieve various styles. Printed cottons are always a classic choice, but I particularly love how sateen looks in this style. For my first version, I used our Lisette twill, and it turned out beautifully! Over the summer, I wore it in linen, and it was a dream to wear—lightweight and breezy. For fall, I’m planning to make another version in washed silk—it’ll be elegant, flowy, and super modern. An indigo ikat would also be amazing; I might just have to try that soon. Fine wale corduroy or a lightweight wool would be fantastic for colder months too.
This dress reminds me a bit of Frida Kahlo’s iconic style. Imagine it with an embroidered yoke—it would be stunning! You already know from the Hide-and-Seek Dress that this pattern is perfect for an embellished or contrast yoke—it has a touch of the huipil aesthetic, doesn’t it? Plus, it’s such a versatile piece—it works perfectly across seasons. I’ll definitely be wearing mine all through fall and winter!
Like many of our women’s styles, I’ve included instructions for a full-bust adjustment to help with fitting this style. The princess seams make it easy to tweak the fit—taking in or letting out just a bit where needed.
I know you all love styling inspiration, so I’ve been gathering plenty of ideas on my Pinterest board for you. I’ll keep adding more ideas there, and I’ll also share styling tips for our other upcoming patterns.

This summer, I paired this dress with various sandals—flat ones for a casual look and heeled sandals for something more polished. As fall approaches, I plan to wear it with my short boots, and perhaps tall boots when the weather gets colder. Accessories aren’t necessary, as the dress stands out on its own, but I do enjoy adding a bold cuff bracelet or a long necklace. It pairs wonderfully with a drapey cardigan or a cozy scarf during chillier days.
What about you? How do you envision sewing this dress? I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
