Children's clothing store in Tianjin shopping district, there is no dressing room children were embarrassed to try
At the age of seven, Xiao-Xiao Li was deeply upset after buying a set of clothes. He pouted for a long time without smiling, saying, "I'm a big boy! Why do I have to take off my clothes in front of others?" The issue wasn't with the clothes themselves, but rather the lack of fitting rooms in many shopping malls. "My son is growing up, and it's embarrassing for him to try on clothes in public," said Ms. Li, Xiao-Xiao’s mother. She recently visited several malls, including Riverside Commercial Building and Xin'an Shopping Plaza, and noticed a strange trend: although children's clothing options were abundant, there were almost no fitting rooms available.
When adults go shopping, they usually try on clothes before buying them. But when it comes to kids' wear, where can parents and children try them on? Many stores only offer makeshift solutions—like trying in the hallway or even using the maternity section as a temporary dressing area. Ms. Cheng, another parent, shared her frustration: "We tried two outfits, but there was no fitting room. One we tried in the corridor, and the other had to be tested at the maternity section." She later discussed this with friends and found that most of them felt the same way. "My daughter is five, and she already refuses to undress in front of strangers in the mall."
Ms. Xu also struggles when buying clothes for her daughter. She rarely finds a fitting room, even a basic one with a curtain. On multiple occasions, she and her child had to give up their shopping plans because there was no suitable place to try on clothes. "Even when some stores offer a storage room as a makeshift dressing area, it's full of clutter, making it uncomfortable for both parents and kids," she said.
According to an interview, many shopping malls don’t see the need for children’s fitting rooms, believing that kids’ clothes can just be bought in larger sizes. A manager from Riverside Mall admitted that most malls don’t think it's necessary. However, he mentioned that there are plans to add more fitting rooms soon. Meanwhile, Li Qiang, a marketing manager at Golden Childhood, a children's clothing store, explained that most kids try clothes directly outside. If customers ask, they can go to the back warehouse for a trial. He also noted that new dressing rooms will be added in their upcoming chain stores.
Tianjin early childhood education expert Teacher Wang Yue warned about the psychological impact of not providing private spaces for children. "Children around four or five years old start showing shyness, especially girls. It's essential for malls to provide separate fitting rooms for kids. Ignoring their privacy by forcing them to undress in public can have a negative effect on their mental development. In the long run, it could hurt their self-esteem and confidence," she said.
