Human face double ear color pottery pot
In the afternoon of June 1st, I received a call from Mr. Zhang, who mentioned that he had recently met a renowned collector named Mr. Yang and expressed a desire to meet me. Mr. Yang was in his studio, and Mr. Zhang suggested it would be convenient for me to come over and be introduced. Since I wasn’t far from Mr. Zhang’s place, I decided to walk over.
Mr. Yang is a passionate collector with a deep appreciation for ancient art. His collection includes a 25-year-old piece known as the "Majiayao Machang Human Face Binaural Pottery." He believes that collecting is about giving marginalized individuals opportunities to study, research, and enhance their quality of life. According to him, challenges, frustration, and joy are the best tools for strengthening one's will. Through persistence and dedication, collectors grow more mature, confident, and radiant. True collecting is not just about possession—it's a process of repeated exposure, familiarization, and integration into daily life, ultimately leading to a meaningful and glorious existence.
Dr. Kam Po, an expert on cultural heritage, describes Yang Zhensheng as a respected figure in the field of antiquities. He highlights the significance of the Majiayao Culture, which dates back 5,000 years and is considered one of the most important Neolithic cultures in the Yellow River region. This culture is divided into three phases: Majiayao, Banshan, and Machang. Gansu Province is recognized as the birthplace of painted pottery, with some of the earliest examples dating back 7,800 years. The most iconic artifact from this era is the human-faced painted pottery—a 25 cm tall, 17 cm wide vessel made of red clay. Its design features intricate black lines depicting facial features such as eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, and hair, showcasing advanced early artistic techniques and aesthetic values. The pot's simple yet elegant form makes it a rare masterpiece of the matriarchal society.
The market value of this piece is estimated at 450,000 yuan.
Yang Zhi, the collector, has always been drawn to ancient art. Initially, he focused on modern masterpieces and even studied Chinese painting under several teachers. Over the past decade, he became deeply interested in early colored pottery. When the author visited his collection, they were amazed by the variety of pottery displayed on multiple shelves. Among them, a human-faced pottery pot caught the author’s attention and was highly praised by collectors. Yang Zhi shared the story behind its acquisition, revealing that it all began 12 years ago during a trip to Gansu.
Influenced by his family's love for ancient art, Yang Zhi longed to visit Gansu, known as the “hometown of painted pottery.†During his visit, he met a local collector named Mr. Zhang. Impressed by Yang Zhi’s passion, Mr. Zhang showed him a special piece—a human-faced pottery pot. Yang Zhi immediately recognized its authenticity and was captivated by it. He offered to exchange something of equal value, but Mr. Zhang refused, stating that it was his favorite and he wouldn’t sell it.
Determined, Yang Zhi made six visits to Lanzhou, eventually learning that Mr. Zhang admired Qi Baishi’s paintings. He then presented a collection of Qi Baishi works and proposed a trade. Upon seeing the paintings, Mr. Zhang was excited and agreed. They exchanged items, fulfilling each other’s dreams. Yang Zhi later told the author that true collecting is about deep engagement, repetition, and connection—only through this process can the real value and cultural significance of a collection be realized.
