Human face double ear color pottery pot
A Tibetan friend once shared an interesting story. On the afternoon of June 1st, he suddenly received a call from Mr. Zhang, who mentioned that he had recently met a renowned collector, Mr. Yang, and was eager to introduce them. Mr. Yang was in his studio, and it would be convenient for the meeting. Since the friend was not far from Mr. Zhang’s place, he decided to walk over.
Mr. Yang is a well-known collector with a deep passion for ancient pottery. His collection includes a rare piece from the Majiayao Machang period—a human-faced binaural pottery vessel dating back 25 years. According to Mr. Yang, collecting is about providing a meaningful opportunity for those who might otherwise be overlooked. He believes that through persistence, one can overcome hardship and achieve personal growth. True collection, he says, is a journey of repeated challenges, familiarization, and daily engagement, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and glorious life.
Kam Po expert: Yang Zhensheng (cultural heritage collector)
Experts note that the Majiayao culture is a Neolithic culture in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, named after the Majiayao site, with a history of 5,000 years. It consists of three cultural phases: Majiayao, Mid-levels, and Machang. Gansu is recognized as the birthplace of painted pottery, with the earliest examples found in Qindao Dawei Bay over 7,800 years ago. The most iconic artifact of this era is the human-faced pottery, which features intricate black-line paintings of eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. This particular piece stands out due to its simple yet expressive design, showcasing early artistic development and aesthetic sensibilities. Its shape is both elegant and functional, making it a rare example of Majiayao Machang pottery from a matriarchal society.

The collector, Yang Zhi, is a literary figure known for his love of painting and travel. Initially, he focused on modern masterpieces and studied Chinese painting under several teachers. Over the past decade, he has become deeply involved in collecting ancient colored pottery. During a visit to his collection room, the author was amazed by the vast array of pottery on display. One particular piece, a human-faced vessel, caught the author's attention and was highly praised by collectors.
Yang Zhi shared how he first encountered this artifact during a trip to Gansu 12 years ago. Inspired by his family's appreciation for ancient art, he had long dreamed of visiting Gansu, the "hometown of painted pottery." After a few days of exploration, he met a local collector, Mr. Zhang, who introduced him to his impressive collection. Mr. Zhang, usually reserved, showed great enthusiasm when Yang Zhi expressed admiration for the human-faced vessel.
However, when Yang Zhi asked if he could purchase it, Mr. Zhang politely declined, stating it was his favorite. Undeterred, Yang Zhi made six trips to Lanzhou in hopes of finding a way to acquire it. Eventually, he learned that Mr. Zhang admired Qi Baishi’s paintings. Yang Zhi then offered to trade one of his Qi Baishi collections for the vessel. Upon hearing this, Mr. Zhang became excited and agreed to the exchange.
Afterward, Yang Zhi told Mr. Zhang that if he ever wanted to acquire another Qi Baishi painting, he should reach out first. He believed that true collecting is about building relationships, understanding cultural value, and embracing the journey. Through patience, persistence, and mutual respect, he found not only a treasure but also a deeper connection to the art and history behind it.
