Sure thing! Let's dive back into the world of fabrics, shall we? This time around, I'm thinking about all the creative ways you can bring our new SoHo Shorts + Skirt pattern to life. Trust me, I’ve got plenty of ideas to share with you.

Some of the fabrics I've highlighted here might remind you of the ones I talked about in my Classic Shirt post. That’s no coincidence—there’s often overlap between the two, depending on the vibe you're aiming for. If you're going for something drapey, double gauze is an excellent choice. Sateen and rayon work well too. But if you prefer a sturdier fabric, lightweight canvas or wool could be perfect. It all depends on the look you're envisioning. Let’s explore further.
Let’s kick things off with fabrics that offer a bit more structure. I’m absolutely smitten with the barkcloth prints from Cloud9—they come in adorable retro styles and have a delightful textured feel. The fabric isn’t overly stiff, but it’s definitely more substantial than regular quilting cotton. I think it’s fantastic for this pattern. Interestingly enough, some canvases are surprisingly suitable for bottom-weight clothing, even dresses. Here’s a fun fact: when I designed Lisette fabrics for JoAnn stores, I wanted to include home-decor canvas in the collection because I think it’s amazing for apparel. Unfortunately, it wasn’t allowed because it confused customers who expected to find home-decor fabrics in the apparel section. But you’re not your average fabric shopper, so feel free to venture into the home-decor department. You’ll find larger-scale prints that can create stunning skirts and dresses. Cotton + Steel also offers some cool canvas prints, and I’ve included some eye-catching options below.
This skirt and pair of shorts were crafted from cotton canvas, and they’re my absolute favorites out of all the samples I sewed for our photo shoot. They strike the perfect balance between drape and substance, exactly how I like them.
With spring just around the corner here in the Northern Hemisphere, wool might not be the most practical option right now. However, come winter, consider looser, slightly drapey wools. Tweeds and suiting fabrics are personal favorites of mine, but as long as the wool isn’t too heavy or rigid, it’ll work beautifully.
By the way (since I know you’re going to ask), I didn’t line these wool shorts, and they’re super comfy without a lining, especially since I usually wear them with tights. Of course, you can always add a lining if you prefer—I’ll add a tutorial to my To Do list to help you out.
Similar to the Classic Shirt, denim and chambray would be great choices for this pattern. They’re also incredibly practical and versatile for building a foundational wardrobe. I’m particularly fond of Kaufman’s cotton/linen denim, especially the dark indigo shade, which feels both practical and timeless.
What about yarn dyes? I’m specifically thinking of Anna Maria’s handwoven Loominous fabrics and Kaufman’s Indikon line, which looks almost like sashiko and comes in a variety of options. These fabrics feel so special to me, and they’d make a truly unique and standout piece. After all, one unique item can elevate an entire outfit!
Don’t underestimate the humble quilting cotton either—it’s perfectly acceptable for skirts and shorts! Look at all those fun prints; it’s hard not to get excited. (Oh, those black-and-white cat prints are killing me! I don’t usually go for conversational prints, but shorts made from those cats would be such a blast this summer!)
Sateen is another option worth considering. It comes in a wide range of weights and drapes, so you’ll want to touch it to ensure it’s right for your project. But sateen has such a beautiful sheen and an impressive selection of prints and florals, so you’re bound to find something you love.
Moving on to the more flowy fabrics, there’s our beloved double gauze. Its textured, slightly wrinkled goodness is unmatched. I adore the yarn-dye options, and that dobby dot at the bottom right from Kaufman feels extra special.
Finally, let’s talk about rayon. It’s so drapey and flattering because of that drape. Cotton + Steel is excelling with their beautiful prints in this category.
