You've probably heard of Project Run & Play, right? It's an online competition inspired by Project Runway, but tailored specifically for kids. Every week, young designers compete to create their best outfit based on a specific theme. This competition has been around for quite some time now, and Oliver + S is proud to remain a sponsor. Recently, they wrapped up Season 14, during which some designs featuring Oliver + S patterns were showcased by the participants. We thought it’d be great to share these creative works with you today!

Oliver + S creations on Project Run & Play

We're starting off with two School Bus T-shirts crafted by Elizabeth. Here she is!

The School Bus T-shirt is one of my favorite patterns to sew for my younger siblings because it comes in a variety of sizes! It’s also super easy to modify, just like I did for my Project Run and Play outfits.

For my little brother’s School Bus T-shirt, I didn't initially plan on color-blocking, but I only had enough plaid knit for the front. So, I cut the front pattern piece just below the armhole and added seam allowance. Then, I used my plaid fabric to cut out the bottom part of the shirt and a plain grey knit for the top portion. It was such a simple change, but it worked perfectly for using up leftover knit fabrics from my stash!

Making my little sister’s shirt was so much fun! For the candy-inspired week on Project Run and Play, I wanted to create something that represented peanut butter cups. I used a tan knit and cut out all the pattern pieces as instructed. Before sewing the shirt together, I cut strips of fabric to make ruffles and added them to the front. I layered the ruffles as I went along and topstitched them down. To add some visual interest, I varied the ruffle widths. I also added ruffles to the middle of each sleeve. After that, I followed the pattern instructions to sew the shirt together. The ruffles were a small touch, but they really made the shirt pop!

Next up, this design proves how versatile the Building Block Dress pattern can be. It was created by Raphaëlle.

When I first envisioned this shirt, I knew I wanted it to include knit fabric for comfort. My daughter wouldn't wear anything else! I started with the Building Block Dress bodice and sleeves since I trusted the fit and construction. I moved the opening from the back to the front and added a button band. I extended the length of the bodice and shaped the side seams to match my daughter’s waist and hip measurements. I also gave it a curved shirttail hem. I divided the back into two sections roughly at the armholes and added 2 inches to the lower back to create a pleat. The sleeves were split into three parts lengthwise at the notches, and I shortened them by 2 inches to add cuffs. The entire shirt was assembled traditionally, with two upper back pieces and bound plackets on the sleeves. The back and underarm portions of the sleeves were made from jersey, while the rest was done with lightweight cotton. The neckline was finished with bias strips.

Raphaëlle mentioned that she believes a similar style could also be achieved using the new Buttoned-Up Button-Down Shirt pattern. It might even be simpler for those who are hesitant about making significant adjustments.

Thank you so much, ladies!
