60 years of apparel changes record changes in the textile industry

Over the past six decades, a nation of 1.3 billion people has transformed from a time when clothing was scarce to a place where fashion diversity and personal expression thrive. Urban and rural areas alike have embraced a wide range of styles, moving beyond the basics of "adequate food and clothing" to explore trends, fashion, and individuality. Clothing has always been a key part of daily life, evolving significantly throughout these years. Each era has left its unique mark, and clothing remains one of the most vivid reflections of those times. In the early days of the People's Republic of China, established on October 1, 1949, traditional garments like robes and cheongsams gave way to modern styles such as the Zhongshan suit and Lenin-style jackets. People adopted new ideals and lifestyles, seeking clothing that aligned with revolutionary spirit. By the 1950s, influenced by the Soviet Union and other countries, simple yet functional designs like the Bulagi dress and Lenin suit became popular among young students. Workwear, particularly blue or gray overalls paired with white shirts, defined the era's fashion, emphasizing the glory of labor. The 1960s brought a shift toward militaristic styles, as the Soviet influence waned. Uniformity in clothing became prominent, especially during the Cultural Revolution beginning in 1966. Military-inspired casual wear dominated, and both genders adopted similar styles, prioritizing collective identity over personal expression. This period is often described as having a "neutral" aesthetic. By the late 1970s, however, change was brewing. Bell-bottoms and bold patterns began to emerge in cities like Guangzhou, signaling a growing desire for self-expression despite societal resistance. A turning point came in 1979 when French designer Pierre Cardin held a "clothing watch club" in Beijing. While the event was conservative by today’s standards, it sparked a wave of curiosity about international fashion. The following year, the first Chinese fashion model team debuted, causing a national sensation. As the 1980s dawned, the term "reform and opening-up" became synonymous with progress, and fashion evolved rapidly. Chinese designers began drawing inspiration from global trends, bridging gaps between Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Western styles. By the 1980s, China’s clothing industry boomed. Brands like Youngor, Shanshan, and Li Ning emerged, catering to diverse tastes. Today, there are tens of thousands of domestic brands contributing to a massive annual market worth hundreds of billions of yuan. Success stems not only from design innovation but also from efficient production and distribution channels. The growth of these brands owes much to China's open policies and the resilience of its people. Looking ahead, challenges loom as global brands enter the market. However, Chinese brands are rising to meet them through creativity and adaptation. While the domestic market remains crucial, the ambition extends globally. Over the past sixty years, Chinese fashion has traversed a remarkable journey. These transformative periods serve as powerful motivators for continued growth. We are confident that Chinese fashion will continue advancing, blending tradition with innovation while making waves worldwide. (Xiao Ke)
