Zhejiang seized 200,000 yuan in counterfeit "UGG" snow boots

In recent months, the popularity of UGG snow boots has not only driven sales but also attracted unscrupulous individuals attempting to counterfeit the brand. According to information from the local industry and commerce department, during a special campaign targeting intellectual property infringement and the sale of fake goods, the Lucheng Industrial and Commercial Bureau in Wenzhou recently seized a case involving the unauthorized use of the "UGG" trademark, with an involved value exceeding 200,000 RMB. On the afternoon of December 16, based on a tip-off, law enforcement officers conducted a surprise inspection at a shoe factory located at Plot 11 in Wendu City, the second phase of Wenzhou. They discovered and confiscated a total of 26 cases (624 pairs) of snow boots suspected of infringing on the "UGG" trademark, along with 4,150 counterfeit kraft paper shoe boxes. According to initial investigations, the counterfeit products used a rectangular cloth label on the heel of the shoes, featuring a white-yellow color that contrasts with the background. The words "UGG" and "Australia" were printed in English, with lowercase letters "m" and "y" placed on either side of "UGG." The colors were similar to the background and shading pattern, making them difficult to spot without proper lighting. A closer look was required to identify the details. On the front center of the kraft boxes, the words "mUGGy" and "Australia" were printed using a method similar to the cloth label. The "m" and "y" were designed to blend with the pattern shading, drawing attention to the "UGG" logo. This subtle yet deceptive design made it challenging for consumers to distinguish the genuine product from the counterfeit. According to the factory owner’s statement, from early November this year until the time of the inspection, the factory had produced a total of 4,164 pairs of these allegedly infringing snow boots. Out of these, 3,540 pairs were sold to a customer in Shanghai, with the transaction amounting to 208,200 RMB. This case highlights the increasing sophistication of counterfeiting methods, as infringers continue to find new ways to mimic well-known brands. Authorities are urging consumers to be vigilant and purchase from authorized retailers to avoid falling victim to fake products. The crackdown on intellectual property violations remains a top priority, as it protects both businesses and consumers from fraud and substandard goods.
