2011 Business Opportunities
In recent years, China has taken center stage on the global stage, marked by a series of major international events. From the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo and the recently concluded Guangzhou Asian Games, these events have showcased China's growing influence and capabilities. In 2011, the country was set for another remarkable year, as it hosted the 26th World University Games in Shenzhen, one of the fastest-growing cities in China, and the World Horticultural Exposition in Xi’an, which ran from April 28 to October 22.
With the upcoming Shenzhen Universiade and the Xi'an World Horticultural Exposition, numerous business opportunities have emerged across various sectors. Beyond traditional industries such as tourism, catering, and hospitality, there is also significant potential in the sale of souvenirs, gifts, and licensed merchandise related to these events. These items are not only popular among visitors but also serve as collectibles with lasting value.
At the launch event of the Xi'an World Horticultural Exposition’s licensed products in November, officials revealed that thousands of franchise items would be available during the 178-day exhibition, with projected sales reaching between 300 million and 500 million yuan. The range of products includes gifts, toys, precious metals, gemstone items, clocks, stationery, and more, all designed under the theme of “green leads the fashion.†These products emphasize innovation, quality, and environmental friendliness, catering to different consumer needs, whether for personal use, gift-giving, or collection.
Meanwhile, the market for Universiade-related goods is heating up. Retailers who previously worried about slow sales have found that many items are selling out quickly. Some products, like stamps and the second set of Asian gold and silver coins, are particularly sought after. Many buyers, especially tourists, purchase multiple items, making it difficult for retailers to keep up with demand. According to one local shop owner, “Other items are hard to restock, and once they’re gone, they’re gone.â€
As the Asian Games have come to an end, attention has shifted to the upcoming Shenzhen Universiade. The opening ceremony of the official licensed merchandise flagship store took place on November 10 at Yitian Holiday Plaza in Overseas Chinese Town. Over 25 franchise producers in Shenzhen have developed more than 900 licensed products, ranging from badges and jewelry to luggage, plush toys, digital gadgets, and even subway-themed items.
The Universiade Executive Board reported that since the start of franchise development in January 2010, over 25 manufacturers and 26 retailers have joined the program, including companies that participated in previous events like the Beijing Olympics and the Shanghai World Expo. Local enterprises have also entered the fray, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic market.
On November 27, Shenzhen Jinboyuan Fine Manufacture Co., Ltd. collaborated with the Shenzhen Universiade Chartered Business Department and Shenzhen Jideng Culture Communication Co., Ltd. to host a product launch event for the "Love Pass Kyushu Rivalry" New Year Love Gift Package and other licensed items. The event featured a wide array of beautifully crafted glass souvenirs, commemorative badges, and more. Organizers emphasized that the Universiade has brought both visibility and commercial opportunities to Shenzhen and its gift industry.
For gift merchants, events like the Olympics, World Expo, and Universiade offer excellent chances to boost sales. These items are not just creative and well-designed, but also carry strong commemorative value. From precious metals to small keychains and medals, the variety is vast, and the appeal lies in their connection to the events themselves. As the world continues to watch China's rise, these events remain powerful drivers of both cultural exchange and economic growth.
