Nantong Textile Designer's Salon

In the context of home textile design, a pressing question arises: if a design pattern is modified, does it still constitute infringement? Are lace designs, as part of home textile accessories, eligible for copyright protection? How can the enforcement against design piracy in the home textile industry be intensified, and how can the professional ethics of designers be improved? These critical issues were addressed during a social management innovation survey conducted by the Nantong Intermediate People’s Court and the Tongzhou District Court in the author spinning market within the Nantong Home Textile City. Representatives from home textile clusters, along with business operators on the market, shared their practical experiences and challenges in copyright protection. Nantong has long been a pioneer in copyright protection within China's textile industry. Through collaborative efforts between administrative authorities, courts, and companies, anti-piracy measures have been strengthened, leading to the growth of the local home textile industry and the flourishing of its market. This initiative has given rise to the "Nantong Experience," which has gained national recognition and is now considered a model for copyright protection in China. However, as the industry continues to evolve and competition intensifies, there remains a significant gap between the demand for original designs and the supply of creative talent. Plagiarism and imitation of new products are still common, often occurring within just a few days after a new product launch. Some cases involve unauthorized reproduction of designs during the printing and dyeing process, while others see pirated works being sold discreetly in the market. These practices not only undermine the value of original creations but also discourage innovation. Participants at the meeting emphasized the need to address these issues at the source. They suggested raising the entry standards for design studios, enhancing the training and management of designers, and promoting higher ethical standards in the industry. The goal is to shift the focus of copyright protection from merely punishing piracy to preventing it through better education and stronger industry governance. To achieve this, it was proposed that a Nantong Home Textiles Designer Salon or Association be established. This organization would create regulations, implement file management systems, establish a credit system, organize expert training, and promote awareness of copyright protection. By taking these steps, the city aims to improve overall design quality and ensure sustainable competitiveness in the global market. Several well-known home textile companies, including Sanfu Island, Jia Yu Si, and Golden Sun, along with renowned design studios such as Sanwei, Ximei, and Shengshi Dynasty, as well as representatives from the Zhihao Copyright Management Office, attended the event. The leaders of the Nantong Intermediate Court and the Tongzhou District Court plan to further engage with these stakeholders and submit constructive suggestions to higher authorities for continued support and development.
